A calendar with several colorful pushpins marking dates.

For 2023 the University winter holiday break is from Monday December 25th to Thursday December 28th. Friday December 29th will be an optional work day for employees as opposed to University Closed days, where they would be required to use leave. However it should be noted that “UNC employees who wish to work on these days must coordinate with and receive prior approval from their supervisor to do so. For those who receive approval to work, please note that campus services will in general be operating at normal holiday closure levels.”

The University recognizes that not all employees share the same beliefs or celebrate the same holidays. As such, an employee can request to exchange the paid Spring Holiday (Good Friday) or Winter Holidays (Christmas) for another religious holiday within the employee’s religious faith, provided that meaningful work can be accomplished by the employee on the University’s regularly scheduled holiday. The unscheduled religious holiday and the University’s scheduled holiday must occur in the same calendar year. Alternatively, employees may also use available vacation, bonus, or other available paid time off to take leave on the unscheduled religious holiday.

For more details, view the Alternate Holidays section of the Holiday & Holiday Pay Policy.

If you have any questions about the holiday schedule, please contact the Benefits & Leave Administration Unit in the Office of Human Resources at 919-962-3071.
