I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ABOUT:

Visitor Parking

Dedicated visitor parking facilities are located throughout the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, providing hourly parking access to UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC Health Care System. Hours of operation are posted at entrances.

  • Employees and visitors needing a short-term/hourly parking option may park at Rams Head for up to 24 hours at a time at the hourly rate or at campus meters.
  • The Carolina Inn, located near Carroll Hall, also offers hourly parking. For more information, contact the Inn at (800) 962-8519.

2-Hour Service Permits

Reserved parking signSchool employees may request a service permit from the Hussman Business Office to conduct University business. Service permits are intended for short-term access (2-hour limit) to locations away from the primary work site or for loading/unloading at the primary work site.

All service permits are valid for both gated and non-gated lots.

Vehicles displaying 2-hour service permits may park in:

1) Any marked service space (for the allotted time period listed on the sign)
2) Any unreserved parking space if all of the service spaces are filled.

Service permits may not be valid during “special events operations.”

Employee Parking

Parking on campus is limited and many employees opt to join the Commuter Alternative Program (CAP) and utilize commuting choices such as local transit, park and ride, carpool, vanpool, biking, and walking and regional transportation to access campus. For detailed information about parking options, visit the UNC Parking and Transportation website.

Additionally, the school has a limited number of permits for various parking lots across campus. These permits are available for purchase to permanent employees only.

Spaces from the departmental parking allocation are assigned to permanent faculty and staff based on years of total state service and the employee’s parking lot preference.

All permanent Faculty, EHRA Non-Faculty and SHRA employees in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Depending on demand and availability, employees may be able to request parking in the following lots:

  • N11 (Venable Parking Lot) – gated
  • N7 (Nash Parking Lot) – non-gated
  • NG1 (Swain Parking Lot) – gated
  • ND (Cobb Parking Deck) – gated
  • BTD (Bell Tower Parking Deck) – gated

Rates vary depending on the lot (gated vs. non-gated), type of permit (regular vs. flex) and the employee’s salary bracket. The cost of parking permit is payroll deducted from the employee’s paycheck on a pre-tax basis.

Current employees have an opportunity to participate in the parking lottery annually in the summer. During the lottery process, permanent employees are invited to submit their top two parking choices based on the allocations available. Once all interested employees have submitted their parking preferences, assignments are made based on the number of years of total state service. Every effort is made to assign a permit in an employee’s top two preferences. If an employee does not get their first or second choice, they can request to be added to a wait list for that lot. The Dean is authorized to depart from these guidelines in order to accommodate unusual or special needs of either the school or individuals.

A parking year runs from August 1 through July 31. If any permits become available throughout the year, they are offered to permanent employees on the first come, first served basis. As new employees join the school, they are offered parking in the lots available at the time of hire.

An employee may request to cancel a permit or change their parking option at any time by contacting the school’s parking coordinator.

Parking permits are virtual. Please remember to register your vehicle and license plate via the online services portal.

For questions, additional information or if you would like to request a permit from the departmental allocation, please contact Colin Stepien at cstepien@unc.edu.
