Frequently Asked Questions

At this time, the school is unable to provide parking permits to adjunct instructors.

Daily parking options are available on and off campus through the ParkMobile app. The Department of Transportation and Parking has partnered with ParkMobile to provide an electronic payment option for the University Park-and-Ride lots served by Chapel Hill Transit. Park-and-Ride lots are an economical option and more information can be found at the Transportation and Parking page and the Town of Chapel Hill page.  ParkMobile is also used for street parking in Chapel Hill, surface lots and garages such as the Wallace Parking Deck on E. Rosemary Street.

Please visit our Parking page for additional information on visitor parking options.

Adjunct Instructors have a suite of offices on the ground floor of Carroll Hall. The room numbers are 46-49. Your classroom key will open those offices.

The faculty and staff lounge is in Carroll Hall, room 261. It’s where you will find free coffee/tea, office supplies and your designated mailbox. You can access the staff lounge (aka mail room) using your classroom key.

Please review the emergency preparedness resources in the Carolina Ready program.

The UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Safety website provides easy, actionable steps you can take to help keep our community safe. Te website has a training module for temporary employees and scripts to use in the classroom.

Each classroom in Carroll Hall and Curtis Media Center has a Classroom Emergency Preparedness information sheet with a QR Code at the lectern. Make a habit of locating it in each of your classrooms. If you find the sheet is missing, please notify the Hussman Business Office.

To get your physical OneCard, please visit a OneCard Office located on the 3rd Floor of Student Stores Building.  Please make sure that you bring a Driver’s License, Passport or Military ID.

Alternatively, a digital UNC OneCard can be added as a mobile ID to compatible iPhone and Apple Watch devices.

Much of the communication at the Hussman School, formal and informal, takes place on a listserv. The faculty listserv is the jomcfac mailing list <jomcfac@listserv.unc.edu>. You will be added to the listserv shortly after completing your hire paperwork as an adjunct instructor. The listserv is fairly active with new messages and announcements posted every day. If you are not receiving faculty listserv messages, please contact Lee Meredith, Adjunct Program Director, for assistance.

Generally, the answer is yes! Our adjunct instructors are welcome to participate in many of the activities of the school including the monthly School meetings, regular training sessions and social events. It is understood that you may have other work and personal commitments that would preclude you from attending Hussman events. However, the door is often open for you when you are available. Many of these opportunities are also available on Zoom if you are unable to attend in person. If you are not sure whether an event is open to adjuncts, please email Lee Meredith, Adjunct Program Director, for clarification.

In most cases, you will receive an email from the Textbook Department of the UNC Student Stores well before the start of every semester regarding the ordering of textbooks for your class(es).

Faculty Enlight is an online adoption platform that allows faculty to easily research and adopt course material options for students. An introduction to the system can be found at facultyenlight.com. You can notify the Student Stores of your text choices or “no text” at https://aip.bncollege.com/app/.

UNC Student Stores appreciates an early notification regarding textbooks for your classes.

  • It is important to address this question as soon as you can so that the Textbook Department can organize the sale of used textbooks as soon as possible.
  • It is also important to let them know if you are not using a textbook or if you plan to direct your students elsewhere to purchase materials.
  • Please note that students utilizing financial aid cannot use these funds anywhere but UNC Student Stores, and they want to be able to provide all students with access to required course materials.

For additional information or to ask a specific question, please contact George Morgan 919‑962‑4789 or textbooks@store.unc.edu.

Please see the Course Syllabi page for more information.

The University Counseling and Psychological Services  (CAPS) team serves to address the mental health needs of a diverse student body by providing timely access to consultation and connection to clinically appropriate services, whether for short or long-term needs. More information about CAPS is available on their website: https://caps.unc.edu/.

  • Same-day, walk-in services are available at CAPS (3rd floor, Campus Health) Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM.
  • For crisis or 24/7 support, call CAPS at 919-966-3658 or call/text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Additionally, UNC Hussman students can take an advantage of “in-house” services provided by our Embedded Counselor Carolyn Ebeling. To make a referral, please email Carolyn at cebeling@email.unc.edu. Carolyn meet with students by appointment only and works exclusively with Hussman students. Available services include an initial assessment of needs, individualized planning for reported concerns, initiating engagement in brief therapy, connection to group therapy services, medication management, and referral coordination. Services are offered both in-person and virtually via Zoom.

If you have a student who’s falling behind in class, you are encouraged to submit a Care Referral Form available at the UNC Dean of Students website to report any concerns you have for a student.

When submitting a care referral form, we are ask that you notify Jules Dixon-Green, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Curriculum. You can do so by writing a separate note to Jules (julesdixon@unc.edu), or forwarding the note of acknowledgement from the Dean of Students’ office when the care referral form is filled out.

If a student is falling behind in class, you can also provide an incomplete at the end of the semester to give them more time to finish.

The University requires student evaluations to be used as part of faculty performance assessments. You can find more information about this process at https://oira.unc.edu/institutional-effectiveness/carolina-course-evaluations-online/.

You will be notified by email about two weeks before the end of the semester that the evaluation website is open. The survey period normally ends on the last day of class. During that period, you are asked to encourage your students to complete the assessment and to monitor the response rates. It may be helpful to ask students to complete the evaluation in the classroom. You can do it at the start of class and leave the room for 5-7 minutes. Or you can end a class period early and ask them to stay and complete it. Some instructors provide a small grade incentive to encourage students to fill out the evaluation. For example, in a class where students had the opportunity to achieve 1,000 points toward their final grade, completing the evaluation earned them 10 points. The student responses are anonymous. You will be informed of the results a few weeks later.

Our curriculum, programs and content areas determine teaching needs which vary by semester. If you would like to teach again in the future, please send a note to Lee Meredith, Adjunct Program Director, and/or Livis Freeman, Director of Course Scheduling. While we make every effort to accommodate faculty preferences, we cannot guarantee teaching assignments.
