The University recognizes the importance of providing flexibility for employees to balance work responsibilities with personal obligations and commitments. Available flexible work arrangements (FWAs) include:

  • Flexible work hours (temporary changes to work hours to adjust for specific events)
  • Flexible work schedules (regular flexibility or adjustments to work hours such as alternative work hours, flex time and compressed workweeks)
  • Flexible work locations (teleworking)

The Flexible Work Arrangements policy and procedures outline the regulations regarding FWAs.

Remote Work Arrangements for Staff

Each SHRA and EHRA Non-Faculty position at UNC Hussman (with the exception of student employees) is designated as fully on-site, hybrid or remote. A determination is made by the dean based on the recommendation of the position supervisor and the head of each functional area. The decision is typically made at the time a new position is created and is influenced by several factors:

  • A designation is based on the position, not the person.  For example, if a hybrid position is vacated, it will continue as hybrid with a new incumbent.
  • Business needs are the first priority, with employee preference second. Each position is expected to provide a high-level of service and be available to the clients and customers it serves. Student-facing positions cannot be fully remote.
  • Different areas of the school and positions may have more or less flexibility based on business needs. For example, positions responsible for greeting visitors, directing traffic through an area, or supporting on-campus events and activities are generally expected to work 100% on-site.
  • Functional teams / areas that consist of more than one person should have on-site coverage every day of the week.
    • This means that at least one member of each functional team should be on-site each day (Mon-Fri) to represent their area and to provide in-person service.
    • Examples of functional teams include business office, communications, information technology, graduate office, undergraduate hub, library, etc.
  • Decisions to convert a position to hybrid / remote may have implications for office space allocations.  For example, if an employee works two or more days remotely, they may have to share an office / workstation.
  • For hybrid / remote positions, an alternate work location must be within a reasonable commuting distance.
  • Proposed schedules should be viewed as permanent; however, flexible work arrangements can be revised at any time by the supervisor in response to changing business needs.

Please contact your immediate supervisor If you would like to request a temporary (up to 30 calendar days) change to your standard work location schedule.

Remote Work Arrangements for Faculty

It is an accepted practice for teaching and research faculty to carry out their work with varied schedules on campus and at alternate locations. It is at the discretion of the Dean to determine whether remote working arrangements for faculty are reasonable and practicable within UNC Hussman.

  • Faculty approved by the Dean to work within the United States but outside of the State of North Carolina must complete the Notice of Employee Working Outside of North Carolina form and submit to Payroll Services at MultistateTax@unc.edu for review to ensure proper taxation and reporting of their income.
  • Remote working arrangements for faculty working outside of the United States are subject to additional approval by the Office of Faculty Affairs and must be reviewed by the University’s Global Hiring Group. Policies regarding global employment can be viewed on the UNC Global website.
