Staff Professional Development Opportunity Fund

Hussman School of Journalism and Media recognizes the importance of encouraging and supporting employees in professional development activities. The Professional Development Opportunity Fund provides funds for staff development opportunities. Staff members may apply for funds for job-related training and development activities. APPLY NOW

 

Permanent EHRA Non-Faculty and SHRA employees in the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Professional development supported by this fund must be work-related and benefit both the employee and the University.

The funding can be used for:

  • Seminars, workshops, conferences, continuing education units (CEU’s) offered by professional organizations, or other work-related professional development courses.
  • Supplementing employee tuition waiver amount.
  • Travel per diem (transportation, meals, and lodging) reimbursement for each approved professional development activity. Please consult the university and school travel procedures for additional information.

While there is no cap or  pre-defined amount per employee, the school may limit the maximum award amount to ensure fair and equitable allocation of financial resources.

Applications for professional development funds are accepted on a rolling basis.

1. Complete a professional development request form and secure your supervisor’s approval.

3. Once the form is signed by the immediate supervisor, forward the request to HussmanBusinessOffice@unc.edu.

3. The review and approval process for staff professional development requests  may take up to 10 business days. A member of the Hussman Business Office team will notify you about the decision.

In accordance with University purchasing policies, Staff Professional Development Opportunity Grant purchases will no longer be processed via campus voucher reimbursement.

  • If you processional development activity involves travel, please submit a travel pre-authorization request in Concur.
  • Please use your T&E and/or P-card (as applicable) to pay for training, event registration, and other (non-travel related) expenses.

UNC Hussman Junior Faculty Mentoring Program

The Hussman School of Journalism and Media hires new faculty members with the expectation that all will succeed and achieve tenure and/or promotion. The school takes seriously its responsibility to support faculty, especially junior faculty, to assist them in their professional growth and development. UNC Human Resources Organization & Professional Development provides many learning opportunities for all UNC-Chapel Hill employees by coordinating, designing and delivering specialized training programs and organizing development activities for teams. LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com) is a UNC-Chapel Hill licensed online video-training library that has more than 2,400 software, career development and technology training titles that you can access from anywhere using an internet browser and your Onyen login. Information Technology Training

Microsoft IT Academy: An e-learning site that provides more than 2,000 online courses, including training in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other components of the Microsoft Office suite, as well as more advanced courses aimed at IT professionals.

LinkedIn Learning: Online video courses taught by industry experts, working professionals, and veteran teachers. The library features modules on products and features by Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Blackboard, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, SPSS Statistics, and Twitter, as well as on HTML coding, open-source software, and many other topics.

Management Training

The Office of Human Resources offers many opportunities for supervisors and managers to learn new skills and to develop existing skills.

There are numerous courses available for new managers and supervisors, experienced managers and supervisors and individual contributors that would like to become a manager or supervisor. You can find a list of suggested courses under Focus Areas: Supervisory/Management.

Additionally, LinkedIn Learning offers a wide variety of video-based learning opportunities on managerial and supervisory topics.  Here you will find individual courses and entire curated learning paths such as “Become a Manager,” “Transitioning from Manager to Leader,” “Building Trust,” etc.

The BEST program emphasizes practical and basic needs of all supervisors, allowing new supervisors the opportunity to reflect on the issues, functions, and challenges involved in leadership roles and supporting their professional development. Organization & Professional Development offers the University Leadership Education and Development (ULEAD) program, an intense program for high-potential, high-performing UNC-Chapel Hill, NC Central University and General Administration managers.

Learning Center Academic Coaches offer a two-day Coach Approach Training for UNC faculty and staff. Participants learn and practice fundamental coaching skills that they can apply in their professional settings in order to enhance their interactions with students and colleagues. The training is a mix of content delivery, coaching demonstrations and interactive practices, and incorporates proven strategies to improve participants’ learning, such as metacognition, self-testing and skill review.
